As the 2018 draws to an end, it affords us a time to reflect and be thankful for all we have. This time of year also reminds us to strive to be better people and treat others with the respect they deserve.

Holiday Closings

In honor of the Christmas holiday, my office will be closed Monday, Dec. 24, and Tuesday, Dec. 25, and will also be closed on New Year’s Eve, Monday, Jan. 2, and New Year’s Day, Tuesday, Jan. 1.

Also, PennDOT Driver License Centers will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 25, Christmas, and on Tuesday, Jan. 1, for New Year’s Day. Customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services online through PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services website, www.dmv.pa.gov.

If you’re traveling, you can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 770 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website.
 
 
Property Tax/Rent Rebate Deadline is Dec. 31

Older adults and Pennsylvanians with disabilities have until Monday, Dec. 31, 2018, to apply for the state’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate program.

The rebate program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians age 65 and older; widows and widowers age 50 and older; and people with disabilities age 18 and older. The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 annually for renters, and half of Social Security income is excluded. The maximum standard rebate is $650, but supplemental rebates for certain qualifying homeowners can boost rebates to $975.

As of June 1, the department had received 472,564 rebate applications. As specified by law, rebate distributions cannot begin until July 2. After June 30, rebates will be distributed as claims are received and processed. Applications typically take four to six weeks to process.

For the 2016 program year, more than $262 million was paid to nearly 600,000 income-eligible seniors and people with disabilities who applied for rebates on rent and property taxes.

Eligibility information and forms are available on my website, www.RepKeefer.com, or by contacting my office at (717) 432-0792. Residents are reminded that assistance in filling out the applications is available free of charge at my district office. There is no need to pay a private firm for help.

Claimants who already applied for rebates may check the status of claims online at www.revenue.pa.gov by clicking on the “Where’s My Property Tax/Rent Rebate?” link. Claimants may also call, toll-free, 1-888-PATAXES to check the status of their rebates.
 
 
PA Fire, Emergency Services Need Our Help

With fire and ambulance services continuing to struggle across the Commonwealth, a 39-member commission created by lawmakers to study the situation recently issued dozens of recommendations.

Statistics show the number of volunteer firefighters has shrunk from about 300,000 in the 1980s to 38,000 today, according to the Pennsylvania Fire and Emergency Services Institute. Ambulance services are facing similar challenges for both volunteers and paid staff, leaving communities potentially vulnerable in emergency situations.

To reverse this trend, the commission suggests several strategies to boost recruitment and retention, including providing Length of Service Award Payments (LOSAP) and other benefit programs, funding basic fire and EMS training at the state level, and offering incentives to employers to permit trainees to attend fire and EMS training.

To further enhance training accessibility, the commission recommends including public safety as a trade/career preparatory program at career and technical education centers across the state and restoring funding for public safety training courses at community colleges.

Action on recommendations in the report would build on two important initiatives enacted earlier this year to boost funding for the state’s ambulance services: increasing Medicaid reimbursements for Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support services and requiring both private insurers and Medicaid to reimburse for treatment provided regardless of whether transport takes place.

Volunteers are an important part of public safety across the state and particularly in the 92nd District. I want to thank all those who answer the call to serve our community.
